The 15 Year Old Reads A Book

7 Feb

On the way home from school the 15 Year Old was reading a book. Something he hasn’t done in a very long time.

The book he was reading was Dean Koontz’s Odd Thomas.

Me: Hey, your reading Dean Koontz!

15 Year Old: Yea…

Me: That’s cool. Why did you decide to read that?

15 Year Old: They are making me for school.

Me: What? Really?

15 Year Old: Yea…

Me: That’s cool that your school assigned such a contemporary author to read.

15 Year Old: I don’t know what that means.

Me: Contemporary? It means current. They didn’t make you read something that was written a hundred years ago…like Jane Eyre or Tale Of Two Cities. Those can be boring because they are so out of date.

15 Year Old: (Gives me a blank stare.)

Me: Dean Koontz writes horror novels. You know…like Stephen King.

15 Year Old: Isn’t he a doctor?

Me: (Pause) I think your thinking of Stephen Hawking….

Can’t believe they get these books and I had to read Silas Marner.

I had to read Jane Eyre. Even the Cliff Notes sucked.
